Understanding and Conquering Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions. While it's most prevalent during the teenage years, acne can occur at any age. With so many myths and misconceptions out there, let's take a deeper look at acne and what can really be done about those pesky pimples.

 
 

What Causes Acne?

Acne forms when hair follicles under the skin become clogged with excess oil (sebum) and dead skin cells, creating the perfect environment for acne-causing bacteria to multiply. This leads to those all too familiar whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules.

The main factors contributing to acne include:

  • Hormones - Testosterone increases oil production, which is why acne often begins during puberty and can flare with monthly cycles.

  • Oil Production - Overactive sebaceous glands produce too much oil.

  • Dead Skin Cell Buildup - Cells don't properly shed, accumulating in follicles.

  • Bacteria - P.acnes bacteria thrives in the clogged follicles, causing inflammation.

  • Genetics - If your parents had acne, you're more likely to struggle with it too.

Treating Acne At Home

Over-the-counter and prescription acne products contain active ingredients that can help:

  • Benzoyl Peroxide - Kills bacteria and helps remove excess oil.

  • Salicylic Acid - Sloughs off dead cells and clears blocked pores.

  • Retinoids - Regulates cell turnover and prevents clogs.

Prescription oral medication may also be required for moderate to severe cases. These can be used in combination with topical products or stand alone. Seek advice from your GP to discuss these prescriptions.

Other helpful tips:

  • Use gentle, oil-free cleansers and moisturizers

  • Exfoliate regularly to remove dead cell buildup

  • Don't pick at pimples — it can worsen inflammation

While most acne does improve over time, consistent care is needed. With the right products and committed routine, you can get existing acne under better control and help prevent future breakouts.
